New Year - New Scoring!

For 2023 we are updating the scoring rubric used to determine AMA rankings. We needed a change based on a couple of factors. The first was feedback from our players and the second was the evolution of our tournament structure from 2022 to 2023. In looking back at our 2022 season, we think we ended up with the right winner and top rankings of players based on how they finished but realized there were some tweaks needed to make sure we didn’t end up with something wonky.

In 2022 our core scoring was based on averaging your finishes in each tournament division (White and Red) and adding bonus points for various criteria. A piece of feedback we received was that meant you could possibly lose points for playing in more tournaments, which was something that didn’t appeal to folks. Taking that into account, we adjusted the system so you can never lose points, making it always to your advantage to get to more tournaments if you can. The core scoring is now the following:

  • Points for finishing place in a Blue, White or Red tournament. Your top finish in each category will be counted toward the final score.

    • Higher points will be awarded for more places in the Blue and White categories. Blue will start at 30th for 1st, White at 20, and Red at 15 (or lower if less than 15 players in the tournament).

    • All participants will receive at least 1 point for playing

  • Bonus points for top places in a Blue, White or Red tournament

    • Similar to core points, these will be distributed to more places based on the tournament. Top 7 for Blue, Top 5 for White, and Top 3 for Red

    • There’s no cap on bonus points. So if you play 2 Blue tournaments and get in the top 7 of both you get both sets of bonus points, even though we only take your highest finishing score

  • Bonus points for tournaments played. Every tournament over 1 played will earn a bonus equal to the number played.

  • Points for finishing position in any of the Virtual tournaments

    • Points will be awarded to the top 3 and then split between the top 50% and the bottom 50% of the field

    • You’ll be able to take your best score from 2 of the 3 tournament styles (Putt18, Walkabout, or OneShot Golf)

    • If we have multiple of the same type during the year, you’ll be able to take the best score from them

You can find more details about the scoring breakdown along with several examples of how it will work in our document here, which will be linked on the Compete and Rankings page all year long. Your best chance at finishing high in the rankings is to try to play in at least one of each type of tournament.

Our goal is to have a point system that encourages players to play more and in different types of tournaments, as well as awarding those who finish the highest even if they can only play a couple of tournaments. As we go about this year we welcome your feedback to see if we have achieved our goal!
