It was a picture-perfect weekend in Connecticut for the 9th Matterhorn International Pro-Am. For the first time the amateur division was moved to Friday night and was only two rounds. It was open to anyone who hadn’t finished in the Top 3 of the Pro division before so it featured a mix of new pros and returning amateurs. First time players Brandon Robinson (Rhode Island) and Mathieu Labrie (Canada) tied with an 81, which was broken on a one-hole playoff where Robinson scored the 2 to Labrie’s 3. Hungary’s Balazs Tompa, another first time player, took 3rd in amateurs.
On Saturday, 33 players from 9 states and 3 countries made up the professional division which teed off under chilly but clear skies. Reigning champion Mark “Highlighter” Novicki (Connecticut) came out strong in the first two rounds pushing the top of the leaderboard. It was Jeremy Inabinet (Illinois) with the round of the day though in round 3, setting a new tournament record with a 34. This would put him one stroke ahead as the cut happened for round 4. In a show of how close this tournament can be a whopping 6 players tied at 123 to be the final players into the cut for round four after Anna Seymour (Connecticut) missed a chance to close the door on many of the pros. She would rebound in the final round and finish T-6 with her husband Justin Seymour (Connecticut) and Tompa.
Inabinet carried the momentum into the final round, stretching the lead out only to watch it get cut to one stroke again by hole 13. He would hang on to become the first non-Connecticut winner of the tournament. Novicki finished in second and Bryan Akers (Georgia) took third. Stephane Dulmaine (Canada) finished in 4th and Rick Baird (North Carolina) broke a four-way tie for 5th on the first playoff hole.
